Meru National Park

A Wild and Untamed Beauty:

  • Remote and Rugged: Meru is known for its untouched wilderness. It’s a place where you can truly escape and feel like you’re in the heart of Africa.
  • Diverse Landscapes: The park has a mix of habitats, from lush grasslands and woodlands to dense riverine forests with doum and raffia palms. This variety makes it home to a wide range of wildlife.
  • Historical Significance: Meru gained fame through the book and movie “Born Free,” which told the story of George and Joy Adamson and their lioness Elsa. You can even visit Elsa’s grave within the park.

Wildlife Haven:

  • Big Game: Meru boasts impressive populations of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and buffaloes. It’s also a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos.
  • Unique Species: Keep an eye out for Grevy’s zebras, reticulated giraffes, and various antelopes like gerenuk, lesser kudu, and greater kudu, which are not found in many other Kenyan parks.
  • Birdwatcher’s Delight: With over 400 bird species recorded, Meru is a paradise for bird enthusiasts.

The best time to visit Meru is during the dry seasons (June to October and January to February) when wildlife viewing is optimal.
